Watercolour Coffee Painting Tutorial

Paint a beautiful cup of coffee with me in this step-by-step watercolour tutorial.

This painting relies heavily on the wet-on-wet technique, making it a great tutorial for practising water control, soft edges and allowing colours to blend naturally on the paper. I’ll guide you through the painting from start to finish and explain what I’m doing as we go.

At the beginning of the tutorial, I also introduce my “tea to butter” method. I explain what this means and how I use different consistencies of paint and water. This is terminology you’ll hear me use throughout my tutorials, so understanding it will make it much easier to follow along.

You can print the outline directly onto watercolour paper, or print it on regular paper and trace it onto your watercolour paper. I also demonstrate my tracing method in the video so you can easily prepare your painting before we begin.

This tutorial is suitable for beginners, but it’s also a lovely project if you already paint with watercolour and would like some extra practice with wet-on-wet painting, water control and paint consistency.
