Based on my original watercolour painting

With its striking mohawk of feathers and intense charcoal plumage, the Palm Cockatoo is truly the punk of the bird world. Found in the remote rainforests and woodlands of Cape York Peninsula, this rare and powerful parrot is one of Australia’s most extraordinary species. Unlike the familiar black cockatoo, the Palm Cockatoo has a bold red cheek patch that flushes brighter when excited, an enormous beak capable of cracking tough nuts, and even a unique drumming display—tapping sticks against hollow branches to claim its territory.

I wanted to capture that wild, untamed energy in paint—the contrast of deep greys, the flash of crimson, and the bird’s unmistakable attitude. Painted in a loose watercolour style, this artwork celebrates the Palm Cockatoo’s strength and spirit while keeping a sense of softness and flow through each brushstroke.
