Beginner Watercolour Brush Strokes – Workbook & Video Guide

If you're new to watercolour, this free workbook and companion video are the perfect place to start. Together, they'll help you build confidence, improve brush control, and develop the essential brush strokes that form the foundation of almost every watercolour painting.

The Video Guide has been designed to be used alongside the Beginner Watercolour Brush Strokes Workbook. As you work through each exercise, you can watch the brush movements in real time and practise at your own pace.

**Please note:** This is not a traditional tutorial with spoken instruction. There is no voiceover or talking throughout the video—just relaxing background music. The focus is on careful observation and practice.

One of the most valuable skills in watercolour is learning to observe. Pay attention to the angle of the brush, the amount of pressure I apply, and the speed of each stroke. These small details can make a big difference.

It's also important to remember that there is no single "correct" way to hold a brush. We all hold our pens and pencils differently when we write, and painting is no different. My grip is simply what feels natural to me. If a different grip feels more comfortable for you and helps you achieve the same result, that's perfectly okay. Find what works best for you.

The goal of this workbook and video guide is to help you build confidence, improve brush control, and develop the muscle memory that comes with regular practice.

For this demonstration, I've used a size 8 round brush. Feel free to practise with different brush sizes as well—each one creates slightly different marks and offers its own possibilities.

Take your time, enjoy the process, and remember— progress comes one brush stroke at a time.
