Small, sociable, and beautifully patterned—the Double-barred Finch is one of Australia’s sweetest little songbirds. With its soft dove-grey plumage, bold black “double bar” across the chest, and charming, inquisitive face, this finch is often affectionately called the “owl-faced finch.” Found throughout northern and eastern Australia, it thrives in grassy woodlands and open forests, always seen in cheerful flocks chattering together.

I wanted to capture their gentle nature and intricate markings in a loose, expressive watercolour style—the soft blending of greys and creams, the crisp contrast of the bars, and the light that dances through their delicate feathers. This piece celebrates the quiet beauty of our small native birds and the calm presence they bring to any garden or space.

This artwork is professionally printed by me on luxurious, 100% cotton rag paper, which brings out the subtle textures and depth of the original painting.
